Walking
I like to walk where I’m not supposed to
through sticks and mud, leaves in my hair
paths going nowhere, dead ends up ahead
realizing again that I shouldn’t be here.
But, oh, isn’t the journey worth it?
I’m scared to walk where I’m not supposed to
the sidewalk only ten feet away
sweat drips in my eyes as I lose my footing
those safe on cement ask what I’m doing
and, oh, is this truly worth it?
I like to walk where I’m not supposed to
I don’t know what’s over the next hill
I’m frightened of the disapproving people
jeering faces while I blaze another trail
But, oh, isn’t the journey worth it?
