Arkijt || Carolinnea || Ceenta Vowei || North Kandel || South Kandel || Upper Okkand || Lower Okkand || Partika || Seena Carolinnea The nation of Carolinnea is the most recent one in the continent's history, having formed only in 1700. King Montgomery, the tyrant king of Arkijt who tried to take over the continent in the tradition of Sarach, died in 1691, three years after his attempts failed and the continent brokered a peace. His only heir was his daughter Caroline, who was much loved by the people but forbidden to rule by the Leechuy, partly because of the laws against female dominance, but mostly because the Leechuy, having been completely disregarded by King Montgomery, was eager to regain his power. In his vengeance he banned anyone from Montgomery's line of descent from ever ruling Arkijt. In a dream Caroline was told to take her supporters north to what was then known as the Savage Lands, a harsh mountainous region where Arkijt regularly sent prisoners and exiles. Her people settled in a city which they named Rednow and named Caroline their Queen. The Savage Lands were renamed Carolinnea in honor of Queen Caroline. The Leechuy in Arkijt, enraged that the woman had any support when he had expressly forbidden it, banned Caroline's entire line of descent from Arkijt for all time. For many years Arkijt refused to acknowledge the existence of Carolinnea, though the nation continued to follow Arkijti traditions (including recognizing the Leechuy as the head of their religion), but the old Leechuy eventually died and the new Leechuy was more open-minded and saw Carolinnea, with its timber and minerals not found in Arkijt, as a way to keep trade "within the family" as it were and reduce Arkijt's dependence upon Okkand goods. The two nations have their own trading system set up outside of the Ttarren Trading Network which the rest of the continent enjoys. The area's history goes back much further than Caroline, though few written records exist. Before the exiled Arkijti came the land was occupied by a mixture of Cottocks (barbarians of unknown origin), Wyrtessians (said to be descendants of Winthro D'Goghe, one of the original NIcholean settlers, and his followers) and ekalaps. The ekalaps were mostly annihilated nearly fifty years before the establishment of the nation, as were the Cottock barbarians from failed invasion attempts into Ceenta Vowei. Exiled Arkijti were also absorbed into Caroline's rule once she settled there. The mysterious Wyrtessians, whose only known city is called Winthro's Hope, were also somewhat absorbed into Arkijti culture. The descendants of couplings between Arkijti and Wyrtessians are derisively called "mountain goats" by pureblood Arkijti, but there has recently been a resurgence of interest in Wyrtessian traditions among both young Wyrtessians and Arkijti, so the culture has slowly been moving away from that of Arkijt. Today Carolinnea is a loose coalition of various cities. Communication is hindered because of the mountains, so it's not uncommon to find Carolinneans who have visited and know more about other countries than different areas of their own.
